As a former teacher, I know how hard teachers work to fulfill the expectations of state or private school curriculum—including expository, analytical, and persuasive writing skills. Often, however, this means students don’t practice more creative forms of writing—or learn how and when to access their voice and creativity. Come time for high school or college admissions essays, this omission can create a bottleneck.
Parents lean heavily on administration and faculty for guidance on what feels like a daunting task for their kids or teens; and students feel stressed as they attempt to write in an unfamiliar style and genre that requires voice, narrative, and creativity.
I offer workshops and talks for parents of middle and high school students, and with the following aims:
To alleviate the pressure of this “admissions season bottleneck” on schools, educators, parents, and students.
To demystify the admissions essay writing process for parents of high school or college applicants.
To supplement standard classroom writing practices by educating parents on voice-driven and creative writing for young people.
To provide a multiphase strategy—beyond basic brainstorming and outlines—through which students can access and express their voice and creativity.
